Following up from the BBS discussion around good documentation and all the config options when using all the modern devices.. I documented each of my machine configs, and their intended use. I mentioned switched the use cases from profile 2 and 3 from what I had before to make more sense for myself.
Here's a link to my spreadsheet showing each config with use case definition and features available:
https://1drv.ms/x/s!AsFM1tZEUD2ZiGpytEX3ymsyQT0s?e=jh8AYS
The top portion of the spreadsheet shows the features available with each config. The bottom portion is the U1MB settings for each profile. IIRC there are really any settings for the SIDE2, aside from populating cartridge slots with ROMs and partitioning the HD for disk use.
FujiNet has a mouthful of settings as well, but I think the only important ones are the SIO related ones. I was going to pull my FujiNet settings, but it's web page isn't responding ATM and I don't know why. And yes, its on and otherwise functioning.
Summary of my configs:
Profile 1 is a 1MB machine running at normal speed SIO. Blue screen for default use matching default Atari blue.
Profile 2 is a 1MB machine running at HIGH speed SIO. Green color to reflect high speed traffic.
Profile 3 is for FujiNet booting. Grey FujiNet boot logo screen matches grey profile color.
Profile 4 is a stock 800XL config. Brown screen for matching the brown of the bone stock 800XL.
1 and 2 are used pretty much as is with no alterations to SIDE. FujiNet is plugged in, as is SIDE2.
3, I am trying to get FujiNet to work with the SDX HD partitions. I don't think it will work, so it currently is bound to using the ATR's on the FujiNets SD card. FujiNet is plugged in, as is SIDE2. Still monkeying with this config so its settings on the sheet are in flux.
4 has a few different ways to use it. All pretty much stock 64K configs.
A) No FujiNet plugged in, no SIDE cart. Boots from physical drive or SIO2PC in a bone stock configuration with BASIC available.
B) No FujiNet plugged in, with SIDE cart and switch UP. Boots from physical drive or SIO2PC. Cart ROM in SIDE is active (Action!, Mac/65, whatever you have there). No access to HDs on SIDE. SIDE loader can be used to launch executables if setup.
C) No FujiNet plugged in, with SIDE cart and switch DOWN. Boots from SDX on the SIDE cart with access to the HD's. Otherwise bone stock with BASIC available.
I have an AtariMax MyIDE ][ as well. I haven't really used it since I got the U1MB and SIDE2. I can use it with Profile 4 where SIDE2 is not in use (obviously). With that I can boot to MyBIOS and have MyDOS 4.53 and access to 4 partitions on the compact flash card. I'm not too interested in getting this to work with U1MB for more memory. While I like MyDOS, I prefer SpartaDOS. The MyIDE shines the most with the its loader being able to navigate a folder structure and run any XEX file from the compact flash - it can do ATR's as well, but it's a whole mess to get working properly and doesn't swap ATR's easily. So think fast games loader for this device. SIDE can do this too, but I haven't messed with it. I've relegated myself to using MyIDE for games, and SIDE for productivity - and I'm fine with that.
Interested to see what others configs look like and your use cases for them.
Next step would be a "how-to" document to establishing the settings and populating the cards. For now the spreadsheet works for me.
This is fantastic, thanks for writing all of this. I've saved the spreadsheet along with the message and will read through it in detail. It's handy to see how everyone else has configured their system and its uses. In addition to your documents, I'll add my notes on how to set up an SD card on a SIDE2 here in case anyone finds it useful when reading this thread.
I am just popping in for a few minutes and I may have misunderstood something, but I have used the fujinet with sdx/side 3.
Basically I just leave the sdx on on the u1m/hsio and the pbi for hard drive (side3). My hard drive disks start at d3:
Once I boot up if I want to force into the config on the Fuji I use cold /n and it will start to boot to the Fujinet config.
If I already have an atr mounted (and I am back into sdx) I just force a DIR on whatever disk the atr is mounted on. It should start to read it.
I know I just to have issues with getting to the Fuji with side2 but I think when I upgraded either the side2 or u1m it started to work fine.
Clear as mud?
